Five Art Collecting Tips
April 24, 2012
LOVE IT
This seems obvious, but it is worth pointing out: only buy art you love.
A piece of art will live with you and become part of your life, so allow your heart to make the first decision.
KNOW IT
Every artwork has a story, and this is especially true for contemporary art. Make sure you read the artist’s statement, visit the artist’s website, and talk to the artists and the gallerists at exhibition openings.
THEME IT
Plan ahead a little. What is your art collection about? Is it an ecclectic mix or is there a theme to it? Think about collecting by subject, by style, by period, or by medium.
BUY IT
Take the plunge. Don’t live with the regret of missing out on a wonderful piece of art because you hesitated for too long. Remember: unlike fashion, software, or music, art never goes out of style – and never needs an upgrade.
ENJOY IT
It’s okay to gloat a little.
